摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase-shift compensation device that improves contrast of a VAN-LCD, and expands its viewing angle. <P>SOLUTION: Liquid crystal molecules 86 in the liquid crystal display device 46 are aligned substantially perpendicular to a substrate in such a state that voltage is not applied, but in fact these are aligned at a predetermined pretilt angle. The phase-shift compensation device 61 for compensating the phase shift of light that transmits the liquid crystal display device 46 comprises: a negative C plate having an optical axis L3 perpendicular to its surface; and a hybrid alignment layer 72 polymerized by hybrid-aligning discotic liquid crystal molecules, wherein an alignment direction L4 of the discotic liquid crystal molecules and an tilting direction L7 of the liquid crystal molecules 86 in the liquid crystal display device 46 are in parallel with each other. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
