PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for inexpensively and stably producing molten iron with superior productivity by heating and melting solid reduced iron with an arc while using an arc-heating type melting furnace, which does not cause a slag-forming phenomenon in the furnace, and can surely discharge the slag produced in a melting operation without tilting the furnace. SOLUTION: The method for producing the molten iron comprises the steps of: adjusting the amount of the carbonaceous material (C) to be charged into the arc-heating type melting furnace 1 provided with a bottom-blow stirring function to form a carbonaceous-material-suspended slag layer 13 in the upper layer of a molten slag layer 12 that has been formed on a molten iron layer 11, by suspending a part of the carbonaceous material (C) in the upper layer; further forming a carbonaceous-material covering layer 14 formed of only the carbonaceous material (C), on the upper side of the carbonaceous-material-suspended slag layer 13; storing the molten iron and molten slag for one tap; and discharging the molten iron and the molten slag for the one tap from a tap hole 10.
