PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat type stapler stably fastening together a large volume of paper with a small magnitude of force. SOLUTION: This stapler 1 has: a base portion 2 provided with: a rotatable clinching portion 10; a magazine portion 3 rotatably journalled by a main spindle 25 in the vicinity of the rear end of the base portion 2 and arranged above the base portion 2; a push-down portion 5 rotatably attached to the vicinity of the rear end of the base portion 2, having a pressing blade 46 in the vicinity of a front end, and arranged above the magazine portion 3; and a handle member 6 having the vicinity of a front end rotatably journalled to a handle support member 7 fixed to the base portion 2, and lowering the push-down portion 5 by being brought into contact with the vicinity of the front end of the upper portion of the push-down portion 5. The clinching portion 10 has a slider 13 sliding along a sliding support shaft 17 to permit lowering operation of the clinching portion 10. The handle member 6 has a roller 61 in a position which is in contact with the push-down portion 5, and lowers the push-down portion 5 based on the principle of leverage in which a portion of the handle member 6 which is journalled to the handle support member 7 acts as a fulcrum, the rear end portion of the handle member 6 acts as a point of effort and the contact point of the handle member 6 with the push-down member 5 acts as a point of application.
