PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video recording and playback device and method capable of responding to the request of user that it is desired to complete viewing earlier as the date/time of video recording of a program is former among video-recorded programs. SOLUTION: A video recording and playback device is adapted to play back a program recorded by a video recording means 1 when the playback instruction of the program is received and includes a playback control means 7 which controls the playback time of the recorded program on the basis of the lapse of time from the date/time of video recording of the recorded program to reception of the playback instruction so that the playback time of the recorded program becomes equal to or shorter than the playback time of the relevant program specified in recording.
