PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp with long life in a cold-cathode fluorescent lamp used for a backlight of a liquid crystal television set and a personal computer. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp comprises an airtight container 1 wherein a discharge medium is filled up in the inside and both ends are sealed, and a pair of cup-shaped electrodes 5 wherein a bottom section 51 and a side section 52 arranged on an end of the airtight container are provided and one end is opened. The bottom part of the electrode has its cross section recessed along an axis direction, with a depth D and a width W of that recessed part 511 satisfying a relationship of D/W≥0.5.
