519,030. Photo-electric control of chocolate mill. HEAD, R., NIMMO, H. BAKER PERKINS, Ltd., and ANCIENS ETABLISSEMENTS A. SAVY. JEAN JEAN ET CIE. Sept. 12, 1938, No. 26548. [Class 40 (iii)] The presence of chocolate or like plastic or semi-plastic material adhering to the surface of a roll 2 or conveyor is detected photoelectrically by making the surface of the roll reflecting and directing on the roll a beam of light from a lamp 3, a photo-cell 5 being disposed to receive the reflected light. If the roll as a whole is not reflective, part of its surface is made reflective by polishing or small mirrors are inset. The effect of the curvature of the roll on the beam may be counterbalanced by suitable lenses. The photo-electric cell may cause the rolls to stop if the layer of chocolate thereon is insufficient.
