PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the following problem: the preparation of a means to know the counter electromotive voltage of VCM causes an increase in circuit scale and an increase in cost but removing the means to know the counter electromotive voltage of VCM disables the accurate velocity control of a head, so that the loaded head collides with a stopper at high speed, generating a great collision sound and damaging the head and a magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: The counter electromotive voltage of a spindle motor for rotating the magnetic recording medium is monitored and the rotation jitter of the spindle motor is calculated to detect the loading of the head from the temporary lowering of the rotation jitter of the spindle motor caused by loading of the head onto the surface of the magnetic recording medium. After the loading of the head is detected, the velocity of the head is controlled with a servo signal read out of the magnetic recording medium and the loading of the head is completed.
