PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape-reproducing optical head which can accurately reproduce magnetic information recorded in a magnetic tape without being influenced by a coercive force of a magnetic transfer film, and to provide a method of reproducing the magnetic tape. SOLUTION: The magnetic tape-reproducing optical head includes the magnetic transfer film 10 that transfers the magnetic information recorded in the magnetic tape 151, a laser light-radiating means 50 that condenses and radiates laser light to the magnetic transfer film 10, a magnetic information-detecting means 110 that detects reflection light of radiation of the laser light from the magnetic transfer film and detects and reads the magnetic information, and a magnetic field-applying means 130 that applies an external magnetic field to the magnetic transfer film.
