PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device for preventing erroneous stop due to output voltage drop during lighting switch-OFF and preventing blinking due to input voltage drop during output short (short circuit/earth fault/sky fault) by accurately discriminating lighting switch-OFF from output short (short circuit/earth fault/sky fault) while holding an inexpensive circuit structure. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device includes a control part 8 for driving a DC/DC converter 4 and a H bridge 5 to supply adequate power to a discharge lamp 7, and for determining the output short-circuit to stop the DC/DC converter 4 and the H bridge 5 only when output voltage V<SB>out</SB>detected by an output voltage detecting part 30 is lower than any threshold value V<SB>th</SB>and a lighting switch condition detected by a light switch detecting part 9 is ON.
