PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a zoom lens that is compact in an entire optical system and has a wide angle of view and a high zoom ratio, and further that achieves high optical performance over an entire zoom range. SOLUTION: The zoom lens includes, in order from an object side to an image side, a first lens group having positive refractive power, a second lens group having negative refractive power, a third lens group having positive refractive power, and a rear group including one or more lens groups, and performs zooming by moving the lens groups so that lens entire length may be longer at a telephoto end than at a wide angle end. A relative moving amount M1 of the first lens group to an imaging surface at the wide angle end and at the telephoto end, a focal length f1 of the first lens group, and focal lengths fw and ft of the entire system at the wide angle end and at the telephoto end are each properly set.
