PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and an image processing method for suppressing whitening by overexposure, while improving black float by reducing backlight luminance. SOLUTION: A lightness extraction section 110 calculates lightness L of each pixel from input image data, and a saturation degree extraction section 120 calculates the saturation degree S of each pixel and a weight W to the lightness of each pixel from the saturation degree S of each pixel. A lightness histogram generating section 130 calculates the histogram of the lightness, by weighting the lightness L by the weight W. Then, backlight luminance is determined by a lightness error number counting section 150, a lightness error number threshold comparison section 160 and BL luminance search section 170, and a grayscale conversion table, based on the determination, is generated by a grayscale conversion table generating section 190, and according to the table, grayscale conversion of the input image data is performed by a grayscale conversion section 210.
