PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder and recording method for enabling the recorder side to easily acquire coordinates information of a person detection area even in an analog type camera. SOLUTION: A video signal processing part 31 of the recorder 3 calculates a difference between an odd field and an even field of a video signal from a camera 2 to determine the existence/absence of a frame. If the difference obtained by the calculation is less than a predetermined threshold, it is determined that the frame does not exist, and the odd field is encoded, subsequently transferred to a file system 33 and recorded in a recording part 34. Also, the even field is transferred to a video outputting part 32 to display live video on a monitor 4. On the other hand, if the difference is equal to or greater than the predetermined threshold, it is determined that the frame exists, and the coordinates of a vertex of a rectangle are calculated from coordinates that are equal to or greater than the predetermined threshold. After the odd field is encoded, the encoded odd field is transferred together with frame coordinates information to the file system 33 and recorded in the recording part 34.
