A communication system for transmitting power or communicating data by means of near field communication between a mobile terminal and a cradle suffer from the problem that there is no means to start up the communication means of the cradle by operating the mobile terminal when the communication means on the cradle has been stopped to conserve electricity and when data communication begins while the mobile terminal is docked. A communication system is configured so that a first control means (22) starts up a first communication means (24) in response to the output from an open-state detection means (23) that detects that a mobile terminal (20) is open, and a second control means (27) starts up a second communication means (26) in the cradle in response to the output from a terminal open-state detection means (25) that detects that the mobile terminal (20) is docked while open. Thus, through these operations and by leaving the mobile terminal (20) open, the first communication means (24) and the second communication means (26) are started up and communication can be established therebetween.
