PURPOSE: A light emitting device and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to improve the light extraction efficiency of the light emitting device by forming a discontinuous structure comprised of a first structural surface and a second structural surface on the sidewall of a substrate. CONSTITUTION: A substrate(30) has a first main surface(302) and a second main surface(304). A plurality of light emitting laminates(32) are formed on the first main surface of the substrate. An etching passivation layer is formed on the plurality of light emitting laminates. A plurality of discontinuous holes are formed on the substrate with a discontinuous laser. The plurality of discontinuous holes are etched. The substrate is divided along the plurality of discontinuous holes.
