[Class 83 (iv)] A hard and wear resistant metal layer containing 12 to 75 per cent. of at least one metal of the group consisting of chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, colombium, and tantalum, and the remainder principally at least one metal of the group consisting of iron, nickel and cobalt together with carbon not exceeding 4 per cent. is deposited by the use of a welding rod of substantially the same composition but unsintered and so constituted that at least a substantial part of the ingredients is comminuted and unalloyed with the remainder of the ingredients and containing a binder. When iron is used its content does not exceed 25 per cent. One deposit may contain 10 to 40 per cent. of chromium, 2 to 35 per cent. of tungsten and/or molybdenum, 1 to 4 per cent. of carbon and the remainder principally metals of the group consisting of iron, nickel and cobalt, the iron not exceeding 10 per cent. Another deposit contains 15 to 35 per cent. of chromium, 5 to 30 per cent. of tungsten and/or molybdenum, 1 to 2.5 per cent. of carbon and the remainder principally cobalt. The deposit may also contain up to 2 per cent. of boron and/or up to 10 per cent. of vanadium and/or up to 3 per cent. of manganese and/or up to 5 per cent. of titanium and/or up to 3 per cent. of silicon. The rod may comprise a wire core containing at least one of the metals nickel or cobalt and a coating thereon containing the rest of the needed constituents which may be mixed with sodium silicate solution and also fluxed with borax, and the coating applied to the core by dipping or extruding and drying in an oven at about 80‹C. The strength may be further increased by heating to about 1000‹C. for 15 minutes, preferably in a hydrogen or other non-oxidizing atmosphere without sintering. The rod may comprise a metallic or non- metallic tube or trough pressed of thin solid perforated or screenlike material filled with a mixture of the comminuted ingredients. The alloying elements may also be used in the form of oxides, carbides &c. A further binder may consist of casein glue or silicon ester and another flux may consist of slip clay. Welding may be effected by the electric arc or oxy-fuel gas method.
