The fixed brake 60, 61, Fig. 2, and differentially-movable brake 34 forming part of the escapement described in the parent Specification are moved into and out of engagement with the rail 66 on the carriage by means of two levers operated by a single rod. In the preferred arrangement, a rod 11, operated by the universal frame 1, is provided with a head 246 carrying two pairs 247, 247<SP>1</SP> of screws which co-operate with levers 265, 249 provided with wedges 59, 33 for controlling the brake 60, 61 and the brake 34 respectively. The lever 265 is pivoted on the framework 253, and the lever 249 is pivoted on the slide 32 carrying the brake 34. The slide 32 is moved differentially by means of a bell-crank 259 which engages pins 261, 257 on a part 255 of the slide, and a rod 38 operated by the universal frame 2.
