PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To greatly improve operability in a telephone set including an automatically answering telephone function or a simplified pager function. SOLUTION: A mode switching type telephone set 1 has a first mode 121 for making a normal speech in call arrival and a second mode 122 for sending, in call arrival, a message to a calling telephone set 2 and then storing information from the calling telephone set 2 and being capable of switching these modes. The telephone set includes: a time measuring means 26; a setting means for setting a time measurement value 14B for second mode setting; a comparing means 15B for comparing a time measurement result in the time measuring means 26 with the time measurement value 14B for second mode setting in the setting means; and a control means 24B which switches to the second mode when the comparing means 15B determines that the time measurement results in the time measuring means 26 become the time measurement value 14B for second mode setting.
