[Class 91] Lubricants stable at high temperatures are formed by adding to mineral lubricating oils an alkyl or aryl substituted aromatic phosphite or thio-phosphite ester of formula in which R is an alkyl or aryl hydrocarbon radical, X and Y are oxygen or sulphur atoms, and Ar is an aromatic nucleus, e.g. as in phenol or cresol, diphenol, naphthol or anthrol. 0.1-2.0 per cent. is a suitable addition. Antioxidants, sludge dispersers, pour-point depressants, and metal soaps may also be added. In an example, 0.25 per cent. of tritertiary-butyl o-hydroxy phenyl phosphite is added to a motor oil. |
