[Class 2 (ii)] 'A film-forming apparatus consists of a rotary drum 12 with a surface 20 upon which dope is deposited from the hopper 11 to rotate with the drum through a curing chamber 50 and which is removed from the drum in the form of a continuous sheet 15. Heated air is passed into the curing chamber through the inlet 17 and leaves by the outlet 18. The chamber has a metal casing 16 but the velocity of the heated air at different points on the drum surface is controlled by a flexible wall 25 inside the chamber which can be moved to different distances from the drum surface. This adjustable wall 25 consists of a number of arcuate leaves 26 the ends of which overlap as shown in Fig. 2. The end 29 of each leaf 26 is secured to a rod 27 by a hinged clamp 30 and can be moved towards, or away from, the drum by means of an adjustable rod 35 attached to the ena of the rod 27. The other end 42 of each leaf 26 overlaps the end 29 of the adjacent leaf and is held to it resiliently by a spring clip 45. Flexible sealing strips 51 of canvas or the like are placed between the flexible wall 25 and the outer casing 16. The discharge end of the curing chamber is flared ut, the end leaf 55 of the wall 25 being curved, as shown in Fig. 1, inside the chamber 19 at the end of the casing 16. The position of the free end of the leaf 55 can be adjusted by means of the rod 63 through worm gear 61. |
