PURPOSE: A magnesium oxide powder preparation method is provided to prepare high purity magnesium oxide from magnesium chloride, which is a byproduct of sponge titanium manufacturing process. CONSTITUTION: A magnesium oxide powder preparation method comprises steps of: mixing magnesium chloride and sodium hydrogen carbonate through ball milling, drying the mixture and performing first heat treatment in the atmosphere, washing the resultant material to remove sodium chloride and non-reactive sodium hydrogen carbonate from the heat-treated material, and performing final heat-treatment of the washed material in the atmosphere.
