The circuit arrangement has a backup capacitance which is arranged between the inputs (E1,E2) and the outputs (A1,A2), and a switch which is in a charging current path of the backup capacitance. A driver clocks a switch for a predetermined period of time when switch is on for periodically interrupting the charging current path of the backup capacitance. An independent claim is included for method for operating discharge lamp.
