The engine (1) has a tension rod extending along a transversal supporting wall (8) and connecting a base plate, a column and a cylinder section with each other. A crosshead is forwardly- and backwardly movable between an upper dead center (OTP) and a lower dead center (UTP) over a travel path (HS). A sliding surface (9) with transversal height is formed on the supporting wall, for supporting the crosshead. A support element (11) is partially provided at the supporting wall, such that transversal extension of the support element is smaller than the transversal height of the sliding surface.
