A catalytic reactor for e.g. the synthesis of methyl alcohol, converts a gas mixture within a charge of the catalytic material. The reactor chamber has numerous pipes through which flow heating or cooling fluids. Each pipe has an inlet chamber and an outlet chamber. Each inlet and outlet chamber is linked to between 2 and 50 distribution chambers. Each distribution chamber is linked to the inlet or outlet of at least 20 pipes. The distribution chambers are formed as cambered passages, whose center line follows approximately an involuted form. The pipes are arranged preferably to the distribution chambers.
