[Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A device for rotating and reciprocating a honing or other tool or a work holder, as described in Specification 493,949, comprises a shaft 22 disposed in casing 15 and connected to the tool or holder which extends from one end of said casing and means for rotating and reciprocating the shaft in timed relation. The tool or work holder is mounted by means of a hollow shaft 38 in the right hand end of the hollow shaft 22 and is expanded and contracted by a sleeve 34, moved axially in the shaft 38 by a piston 31 and fluid supplied through passages 23, 18, 35 and 24, 19, 36. The shaft 22 is secured by a pin 27 to a hollow shaft 26 on which is pivoted, by means of two balls 60, a swash plate 58 the angle of which can be adjusted by a pin 64 and spaced flanges 63 of a sleeve 62, which can be moved axially by a pin 71 engaging an annular groove of a shaft 66, screwed at 67 to engage the shaft 26 and rotatable by a knob 74. The shaft 26 and swash plate 58 are rotated by a grooved pulley 42 and belt from a motor and the inner ring 56 of the swash plate may be rotated and prevented from moving axially by a ball 55 thereof which engages a radial cylindrical groove 54 in a disc 53 having teeth 52 which engage radial grooves in the end plate 49 of a sleeve 44 driven by a pulley 40 and belt from the same motor as the pulley 42 but at any desired different speed. The adjustment of the swash plate varies the length of the axial displacement of the tool or work holder. If the amount of expansion is to be varied, e.g. in the case of a hone 111, Fig. 5, the spindle 99, which has tapered walls to engage the abrading stones 105, is connected to the actuating sleeve 34 by a member 79 having right and left hand threads 83, 82 and external teeth 86 engaged by a pinion 87 pivoted in the shaft 38 and rotatable by a band-operated internally-toothed sleeve 89. When the member 79 has been rotated, to adjust the position of the spindle 99 by means of this sleeve 89, it is locked by a projection on a spring-pressed sleeve 93. The casing 15 may be charged with lubricant through a hole 175 and can be mounted together with its driving motor, vertically or horizontally, singly or in an opposed pair, on a fixed frame or on a movable slide or on a machine for boring &c. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 stated that the device could carry a boring, drilling, reamering, or burnishing tool. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
