摘要 534,067. Directive wireless systems; aerials. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Dec. 22, 1939, No. 32812. Convention date, Jan. 3. [Class 40 (v)] For radiating or receiving centimetre waves, a two-wire or coaxial feeder, or a dielectric guide, is terminated by a flared horn. Fig. 1, having a radial length and aperture so related to the flare angle # 0 that the " beam angle 29, Fig. 13, is a minimum, and the power gain (as compared with a single dipole) a maximum. In Fig. 1 a rectangular horn is connected to a " hollow pipe" section 18, of dielectric or conducting material, and is energised by, or feeds, a rod antenna 14 at the end of a coaxial feeder 10, 12. The horn may be circular or pyramidal in section. The sides may be straight, as shown, or concave, convex or hyperbolic. The horn acts as a directive radiator giving a response, Fig. 13, which is proportional, inter alia to the flare angle # 0 , the length of the side, and the working wavelength. Analyses are given of the radiating and directional properties of the horn for different forms of " guided " wave, such as the H 0,1 type, Fig. 5, and the R 1,0 type, Fig. 8, and of the conditions under which the production of undesirable secondary " lobes " of free-wave radiation can be prevented or minimised, particularly when the invention is applied to blind-landing equipment for aircraft. Alternative shapes of horn and of methods of coupling it to transmitting or receiving apparatus are shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Graphs are given which relate the optimum flare-angle # 0 and the ratio of the radial length P 1 , Fig. 4, of the horn to the working wavelength # for a given range of beam angles (Fig. 33 not shown) ; also the relation of the power gain to the dimensions of the horn (Fig. 34 not shown) ; also the optimum design of horn for a given power gain both for the H 0,1 and H 1,0 type of guided wave (Fig. 36, not shown), Using H 1,0 waves with an increase in the flarehorns of equal length. angle tends to sharpen the principal lobe of the beam and to increase the secondary loges ; whilst for horns of constant flare-angle, the width of the beam tends to increase with the length P, of the horn. The H 1,0 wave on the other hand, gives a clear-cut beam for flare-angles less than those required for maximum power gain, but produces an irregular beam for wider flare-angles.
