<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a passbook reader capable of automatically discriminating magnetic stripes of different specifications. <P>SOLUTION: When reading of data on a magnetic stripe fails, reading is tried by gradually changing the magnetic stripe reading position from the passbook insertion slot to the back side or to the front side in parallel to the magnetic stripe. When reading of data on a magnetic stripe fails, reading data on the magnetic stripe is tried by sequentially changing reading methods according to the predetermined data attribute.
