PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-efficiency two-photon absorbing material for attaining practical applications using two-photon absorption by the use of a small inexpensive laser, to provide a two-photon absorption recording and reproducing method, in which after non-rewritable recording is carried out, using two-photon absorption of a two-photon absorption material that contains an electron-withdrawing compound having a high ionization potential and a pi-electron conjugate two-photon absorption compound having an electron donating group and thereby chemically amplified by the electron withdrawing compound, the information is reproduced by irradiating the recording material with light and detecting the difference in the intensity of the light emission of the material, to provide a two-photon absorption optical recording material allowing the recording and reproducing, and moreover, and to provide a two-photon absorption three-dimensional optical recording material, a two-photon absorption three-dimensional optical recording method and reproducing method using the material. SOLUTION: The two-photon absorbing material contains an electron-withdrawing compound and a two-photon absorption compound comprising a non-cyclic pi-electron conjugate system at least one end terminal of which is modified with an electron-donating group.
