PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that has a fixing device of a tensionless film heating system, the fixing device being configured to prevent damage to a film during the removal of a jam. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided so that the fixing film can take a tension-released state and a tension state, and it has a switching means for performing switching from the tension-released state to the tension state when a printing operation is not performed. Even when a jammed sheet is pulled in an oblique direction during the removal of a jam which has been caused in the fixing film in the tension-released state, since force in the longitudinal direction is received with the entire film, the film is prevented from being pressed against the film restriction member at an end with strong force and damage to the film can be prevented.
