PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce power consumption of an image reading apparatus without reducing the processing speed of a reading control section in the state where the image reading apparatus is in a stable standby state. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus is equipped with: an image reading section having a light source for irradiating an original document with light and an image sensor for reading an image from a reflection light of the original document to output an image signal; a reading control section for controlling image reading operation of the image reading section; and an operation clock adjusting section for adjusting an operation clock supplied to the image sensor and the reading control section. In this case, when the image reading section is in a standby mode, the operation clock adjusting section adjusts the operation clock to the image sensor so that the frequency of the operation clock becomes lower than the operation clock in a usual operation mode of the image reading section while maintaining the frequency of the operation clock to the reading control section.
