PURPOSE: A compressing/decompressing method guaranteeing upper compatibility and a device thereof are provided to normally compress/decompress basic data when an application supporting a compression file format of a lower version decompresses a file compressed by an application supporting a compression file format of an upper version. CONSTITUTION: A compressing unit(108) applies an compressing algorithm to compression target data to generate compression data. A compression file generating unit(110) generates a compression file including the compression data, a header, and an extension field. The header includes information about the compression data. The extension field is made of an extension field termination code and an extension field unit.
