<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition satisfying at least one characteristic or having a suitable balance regarding at least two characteristics in a characteristic such as the high upper limit temperature of a nematic phase, the low lower limit temperature of the nematic phase, small viscosity, suitable optical anisotropy, large negative dielectric anisotropy, large specific resistance, high stability relative to UV rays and high stability relative to heat, and to provide an AM element having a short response time, a large voltage retaining ratio, a large contrast ratio, a long life or the like. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition includes a specific compound having a large negative dielectric anisotropy as a first component and a bicyclic compound having a small viscosity as a second component, may contain a specific compound having a small viscosity as a third component and a specific compound having a large negative dielectric anisotropy as a fourth component, and has a negative dielectric anisotropy.
