METHOD FOR USING COUPLING HAVING ANGULARLY ORIENTED CAVITY

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To absorb bending and torsion acting on a coupling when a pipe element is joined.

SOLUTION: In a method for joining a pair of pipe elements at opposite ends, a pipe coupling is used. This pipe coupling includes an interconnectable pair of coupling segments 52 having connection members 72 and 74 at the opposite ends. The connection members draw the segments toward one another and tightens them so as to engage with the pipe elements. Each segment has a cavity 58 provided between inwardly projecting arcuate surfaces that engages with grooves in the pipe elements. The cavities house a sealing member that extends circumferentially around the pipe elements. Angularly oriented surfaces 66 are disposed adjacent to the connection members. The surfaces on opposing segments engage with one another and cause both pipe coupling segments to rotate in mutually opposite directions around an axis perpendicular to the pipe elements. The cavities are angularly oriented with respect to the axis so that the cavities receive the sealing member without distorting it when the segments rotate.
