PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable stable manufacture of a continuous casting slab with good quality even when slab drawing speed from the inside of a mold is increased by allowing both prevention of quality defect of a slab surface and prevention of machine end bulging due to solidification acceleration. SOLUTION: The continuous casting method for steel guides a slab using a roll whose inside is water-cooled. One cooling hole arranged at the center part of the cross section to pass water along an axis direction and further a plurality of cooling holes to pass water along the axis direction are additionally arranged on an almost the same circumference at the surface layer of the cross section in the roll. The number of the cooling holes arranged at the surface layer is 5-60 in a range from the roll surface to 2/3 depth of the roll radius. The percentage of the total cross sectional area of the cooling holes is made to 10% or less to the cross sectional area of the roll. Casting is carried out in such a way that the heat removal amount from the slab by the roll having the cooling holes at the surface layer and the center part is made to 0.25-1.0 (MW/m<SP>2</SP>).
