[Class 98 (ii)] [Also in Group IV] Tricarbocyanine sensitizing dyes for silver balide emulsions are made by condensing, in the presence of a solvent and an acid binding agent, a quaternary salt of a thiazole or selenazole containing a reactive methyl group in the α-position to the heterocyclic nitrogen atom with a compound obtainable by acetalizing γ-pyrone with an alkyl orthoformate, e.g., methyl, ethyl or propyl orthoformate. The latter compounds are believed to be diformylacetone-hexa-alkylacetals of the formula (R 1 O) 2 .CH.CH. 2 C (OR 1 ). 2 CH 2 .CH (OR 1 ) 2 where R 1 is alkyl, and the dyes obtained have the general formula where R is alkyl or aralkyl, X is the residue of a thiazole or selenazole ring, and Y is an acid radicle. Polycyclic thiazoles and selenazoles are preferably employed, e.g., benz-, naphtha- and anthrathiazoles and -selenazoles. Pyridine may be used both as solvent and acid binding agent, but it is preferable to employ a solvent, such as ethyl alcohol, with an acid binding agent, such as sodium acetate. In examples, the methyl and ethyl p-toluene sulphonates of 1-methylbenzthiazole, and the ethyl p-toluene sulphonate of 1-methyl-5 : 6- benzbenzthiazole are condensed with diformylacetone-hexa-ethylacetal. |
