PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear gauge preventing foreign matter such as dust from entering the linear gauge. SOLUTION: A packing material 10 is attached to an opening end 11a of an outer tube 11 of a linear gauge 100. The packing material 10 includes a ling part 10a; a plurality of inner peripheral side projections 10b provided on the inner peripheral side of the ling part 10a; and a plurality of outer peripheral side projections 10c provided on the outer peripheral side of the ring part 10a. The inner peripheral side projections 10b of the ring part 10a have a shape corresponding to the shape of spline grooves 3a of a shaft body 3, are fit into the spline grooves 3a and are in contact with the spline grooves 3a. With this structure, a foreign matter is prevented from entering the body and also, even if the foreign matter is accumulated on the spline groves 3a, the foreign matter is removed by scraping them from the spline grooves 3a by the inner peripheral side projections 10b, for example, upon operation of the shaft body 3.
