PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus which make reuse of positive rotation possible with a simple configuration when the positive rotation of a rake of a clarifier becomes impossible. SOLUTION: When the positive rotation of a rake becomes impossible in a clarifier wherein sludge is precipitated in a tank for receiving a waste liquid and the precipitated sludge is gathered to the center of the bottom face by a rake and discharged by suction with a sludge discharge pump through a sludge discharge pipe from the bottom face, the rake is reversely rotated. The apparatus for operating a clarifier comprises a torque detector for a rake operation motor, an abnormality display means for stopping the positive rotation of the rake operation motor when the torque exceeds a set value, an reversely rotating operation switch, a device for setting reversely rotating torque alarming value, a first determination means for determining whether or not the torque is the alarming value or higher, an alarming means, a device for setting reversely rotating torque abnormal value, a second determination means for determining whether or not the torque is the abnormal value or higher, a timer for setting the reverse rotation time, and a third determination means for determining whether the reverse rotation is within the set time of the timer or not.
