PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic ink character recognition device and a magnetic ink character recognition method, which have high character recognition rate and reduce a time for recognition processing. SOLUTION: Characters printed on a medium with magnetic ink are read as magnetic waveform information by a read part 11. Standard waveform templates of respective characters to be compared with the magnetic waveform information and deformed waveform templates of respective characters where waveforms of the standard waveform templates are deformed are stored in a template storage part 12. By comparison between similarities of the magnetic waveform information read and the standard waveform templates or deformed waveform templates, the character recognition part 13 recognizes characters of templates in which similarities between the two are equal to or larger than a threshold are recognized as characters to be read. In a comparison object control part 14, it is stored whether the kind of template whose similarities are equal to or larger than the threshold is the standard waveform template or the deformed waveform template and, in recognizing characters of next magnetic waveform information, the kind of template stored is applied as a comparison object.
