<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a VA (vertically aligned) liquid crystal display device having a high front contrast. <P>SOLUTION: The VA (vertically aligned) liquid crystal display device includes: a front-side polarizer (14); a rear-side polarizer (12); a VA liquid crystal cell (LC) disposed between the front-side polarizer and the rear-side polarizer; and a first retardation area (16) including one or more retardation layers between the rear-side polarizer and the VA liquid crystal cell. The first retardation area satisfies the following expressions: 0 nm≤Re(590)≤10 nm and ¾Rth(590)¾≤25 nm, wherein Re(λ) is an in-plane retardation (nm) at a wavelength of λnm, and Rth(λ) is a retardation (nm) in the thickness direction at a wavelength of λnm. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
