<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display device capable of displaying an image with high contrast. <P>SOLUTION: The projection display device includes: a light source 101; an illumination optical system 102; polarization beam splitters 107, 112, 115; reflection type liquid crystal display elements 108, 112, 115; a projection optical system; and aperture diaphragms 121, 122 provided at least at either of the projection and illumination optical systems for narrowing a diagonal direction of an aperture for allowing passage of light emitted from the illumination optical system or the projection optical system. In the reflection type liquid crystal display element, assuming that α and β are 0 or positive numbers satisfying ¾α¾+¾β¾≤10, a liquid crystal orientation direction on the substrate 11 side is set in a direction of (60±α)° to one rotation direction with respect to a reference direction, and a liquid crystal orientation direction at the substrate 12 side is set in a direction of (60±β)° to a rotation direction reverse to the rotation direction with respect to the reference direction. The reference direction is set at a direction parallel to the substrates 11, 12, namely, at a direction in an angle range within ±5° centered in a direction forming angles of 45°, 135°, 225°, 315° with respect to a vibration direction of polarized light entering the substrate 11. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
