PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing methionine while reducing the corrosion of piping and a reaction vessel well. SOLUTION: The method for producing 3-methylthiopropanal includes reacting acrolein with methylmercaptane in the coexistence of an acidic compound and a basic compound to afford a reaction mixture containing the 3-methylthiopropanal, adding water to the reaction mixture, heat-treating the resultant product within a range of 60-130°C, and distilling the heat-treated product.
