PURPOSE: A method for manufacturing high purity methacrylic acids is provided to economically prepare high purity methacrylic acid products suitable for the manufacture of methacrylic acid polymers. CONSTITUTION: A method for preventing 2-hydroxyisobutyric acids in a stream including methacrylic acids and acid-catalysts comprises a step of adding a stabilizer capable of neutralizing an acid-catalyst to the methacrylic acid-containing stream. The stabilizer is selected from the group consisting of ammonia, corrosive agent, magnesium hydroxide, and magnesium oxide.
