PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the variable speed quality of a continuously variable transmission equipped with a lockup clutch. SOLUTION: A CVT control unit for controlling the continuously variable transmission has a multistage variable speed mode of switching a preset fixed variable speed ratio stepwise. A torque converter is assembled to the continuously variable transmission, and the lockup clutch is built in the torque converter. When the lockup clutch is controlled into a transient state in the set state of the multistage variable speed mode of high variable speed, the variable speed is reduced by the CVT control unit. Consequently, the turbine rotation speed Nt at the lockup clutch output side varies gently (sign β).
