PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polyester, excellent in fiber productivity, capable of stably producing fibers suppressed with orientation crystallization and exhibiting a high strength especially in one step yarn production process in producing the fibers by using the polyester produced by using mainly a titanium catalyst. SOLUTION: This method for producing the polyester composition is provided by, in producing the polyester from dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol, adding a 10 to 1,000 mmol% carboxylic acid metal salt of Mg, Mn, Co or Zn based on the recurring unit of the polyester in its esterification reaction or polycondensation reaction, also adding a phosphonic acid compound before or after the addition to form layered structural particles, and after passing ≥5 min after the addition of the phosphonic acid compound, adding a titanium compound so as to become 3 to 30 mmol% as titanium atoms based on the total recurring units constituting the polyester, and then performing the esterification reaction and polycondensation reaction.
