536,825. Hydrocarbon derivatives used as rubber accelerators, plasticizers, or wetting agents &c. VALKENBURGH, E. A., VAN. Nov. 25, 1939, No. 30809. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1938. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] [Also in Group V] Amino substances, e.g. anhydrous or aqueous ammonia, aliphate or aromatic mono- or polyamines, primary, secondary, tertiary, or mixed amines, are reacted with a composite partial oxidation mixture of petroleum hydrocarbons, e.g. obtained from asphalt base petroleum or paraffin base petroleum, oxidized with air, oxygen &c. using manganese oleate as a catalyst, to give carboxylic acids, alcohols, esters, lactones, aldehydes, ketones &c. the reaction mixture containing substantial amounts of amino-neutralization and aminocondensation constituents &c. and non-aminoreactive oxidation constituents. The reaction mixtures are added to natural or synthetic rubber, balata, gutta-percha. polymers, isomers, or derivatives of rubber, rubber latex, reclaim rubber, or mineral rubber &c. and the composition vulcanized. Other compounding ingredients may be used, e.g. stearic acid, pigments such as zinc oxide for which the reaction mixtures, which may include unchanged residual hydrocarbons, act as wetting agents, they also act as plasticizers, accelerators, age-resistors &c. and give improved mechanical properties to vulcanized rubber, or they act as stabilizers for latex or other dispersions in water or oil, or as dispersing, wetting or penetrating agents, e.g. facilitating impregnation of textile fabrics with rubber latex, or as detergents or foaming agents, or as agents for controlling the consistency of oil-well drilling fluids.
|
