526,193. Motor-cycles. AUTO UNION AKT.-GES. March 9, 1939, No. 7726. Convention date, March 9, 1938. [Class 79 (iii)] In a bicycle with an auxiliary engine adapted to drive the rear wheel through reduction gearing, the bicycle wheel 32 is secured to a hub 3 rotatable on coned bearing members 20, 21, on the fixed axle spindle 1, the cone member 20 being connected to the pedal drive 22 and loose on the spindle, and the power unit is carried solely by the cone member 21 on the spindle. The engine 2 is carried by a casing 7 divided in the plane E-E and attached to a flange on the hub bearing members 21 which may be fast on the spindle and/or connected to the cycle frame by a torque resisting member. The drive is transmitted through a chain from the crank shaft 4 to a clutch member 11 on a countershaft 12 from which the wheel hub 3 is driven through gears 9a, 15, 16. The hub bearing member 20 is loose on the spindle being attached to a pedal-drive chain wheel 22 and serving to drive the wheel hub 3 through a free wheel clutch (not shown). The magneto 36 is mounted on the outer part of the casing and driven directly by the crank shaft 4. The wheel drum 32 is perforated with fan blades 35 for cooling the engine. |
