PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a more flexible system for recording position data. SOLUTION: The method and device for recording multiple information volumes on a record carrier, usually called as multi-session recording, are described. This device has a control means (20) for recording and retrieving the position data indicative of the position of recorded information volumes. The control means includes a mapping unit (31) for creating a session map zone. In the session map zone, session map blocks (SEM) are recorded that contain the position data of closed sessions, i.e. sessions that have been completely recorded, in session items.
