PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer latex for paper coating, which provides a coated paper having excellent white paper gloss, print gloss, and strength in printing, and to provide a composition for the paper coating.SOLUTION: The copolymer latex for the paper coating is obtained by using a polymerization step having at least two stages involving different monomer compositions, and polymerizing, at the first stage, 13-32 wt.% of the total of monomers consisting of 1.5-24 wt.% aliphatic conjugated diene monomer, 5.1-25 wt.% vinyl cyanate monomer, 3.1-20 wt.% ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, and 0-22.3 wt.% other monomers copolymerizable therewith (the total of the whole monomers is 100 wt.%), and has a difference of 0-1.0% between the haze of a film obtained by coating the copolymer latex on a transparent base material (coated amount expressed in terms of dry weight is 13 g/m±1 g/m) measured based on JIS K7136, and the haze of the transparent base material itself. |
