<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data storage device. <P>SOLUTION: A first non-volatile mass storage device can be placed in an available state and an unavailable state. When the first mass storage device is in its unavailable state, a storage controller only accesses a second mass storage device. The unavailable state means that the device is physically unavailable (e.g., removed) or simply that the storage controller does not access it until it is placed back in the available state.
