<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce an operation amount by thinning down feature points that does not give a large influence on object recognition. <P>SOLUTION: When a filter (distribution density filter) 1 is made to act on an area a, feature points are thinned down because the density of the feature points is low. On the other hand, when the filter 1 is made to act on an area b, feature points remain because the distribution density of the feature points is high. Further, when a filter (vertical line filter) 3 is made to act on an area c, since feature points show a distribution of horizontal lines and the distribution density of the feature points is small, the feature points are a candidate for thinning down, here. Since the distribution density shows a large value when a filter (horizontal line filter) is applied, the feature points remain. In addition, when the filter (vertical line filter) 3 is made to act on an area d, since feature points show a distribution of vertical lines to make a distribution density large, the feature points remain.
