Disclosed is a tenocyte culture medium comprising insulin and betamethasone. Also disclosed is a method for producing a culture of tenocytes comprising the steps of: (i) providing an isolated tenocyte-containing tissue; (ii) washing and mincing said tenocyte-containing tissue to form explants; and (iii) culturing said explants in the presence of a tenocyte culture medium comprising insulin and betamethasone to yield free tenocytes; wherein at least 90% of the cells present in the culture are tenocytes.
